Types of Sponsorship

Spousal sponsorship program covers a variety of relationships, including spouses, common-law partners, and conjugal partners. Understand the distinctions and determine which category applies to your situation. Each relationship type has specific documentation and requirements.

You may sponsor your dependent children age 22 and under
You may sponsor children aged 22 and over under certain conditions
Sponsor from inside or outside Canada
Sponsor must sign and fulfill sponsorship undertaking / agreement
Citizen can sponsor while residing outside of Canada
PR can only sponsor while residing inside Canada

Who can be a sponsor?

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Be of 18 years of age or older
Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada
A person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
Additional requirements may be imposed depending on who is being sponsored
Sign sponsorship agreement
Must be living in Canada, if not residing in Canada when submitting the application, Sponsor must demonstrate that their intentions are to reside in Canada with the applicant. (This applies to a Citizen)
PR can sponsor if only residing inside Canada
